Shiatsu is a holistic Japanese form of massage therapy that traces its roots back to Traditional Chinese Medicine and shares the same philosophy and understanding of human nature and the universe. Vital energy called ‘Ki’ (‘Qi’ in Chinese) flows throughout our body in a system of channels called meridians. A smooth and unimpeded flow of Ki ensures the healthy functioning of our internal organs as well as our emotional, mental and spiritual wellbeing. However, if the flow of Ki becomes blocked or depleted through injury, stress, unhealthy lifestyle choices and excessive or unexpressed emotions, the harmony of our body is disrupted and pain and dis-ease occurs.
how does shiatsu work?
Shiatsu literally translates as ‘finger pressure’ and works by applying pressure with thumbs, fingers, palms and sometimes elbows, knees and feet along the meridians of the body and to specific acu-points called ‘tsubos’. Gentle stretches and joint rotations are also used to promote the free flow of Ki and flexibility. Oriental medical theory along with hands-on palpation techniques provide the framework to determine which meridians and organs are deficient, blocked or in excess. The practitioner’s aim is to balance the flow of Ki throughout the body, thus restoring harmony to body, mind and spirit.
how does shiatsu feel?
Giving shiatsu is said to be art in motion, a moving mediation, leaving the practitioner as balanced and energized as the receiver. It is performed with the client lying fully clothed on a futon mattress on the floor. Slow and sustained pressure is applied in a rhythm that encourages deep relaxation and allows your nervous system to shift into the para-sympathetic mode, where the body is capable of self-repair. The skillful application of this ancient art, combined with the power and nurture of human touch, creates an experience that is relaxing and invigorating at same time, leaving you with a complete and satisfied feeling all over. what does shiatsu treat?
Many conditions respond well to Shiatsu such as:
| • back pain |
• sciatica |
| • headaches |
• muscle stiffness |
| • digestive disorders |
• menstrual disorders |
| • stress & anxiety |
• fatigue & low energy |
| • sleeping difficulties |
• & much more ... |
Shiatsu reduces stress, improves circulation and flexibility, encourages postural integrity and strengthens immunity and overall health. Shiatsu is able to detect and correct imbalances in the body’s Ki flow long before serious health problems arise. This makes it a powerful tool for preventative health care and suitable for anyone wishing to maximize their wellbeing and increase their longevity. how many sessions will I need?
An individual session is a complete and satisfying experience and has the ability to rebalance your system. For a deeper effect as well as treating specific health concerns 4-6 sessions spaced 1-2 weeks apart are recommended. A monthly Shiatsu session combined with healthy lifestyle choices is an optimal way to maintain health and wellbeing on all levels. A gift voucher for a shiatsu session makes a meaningful and inspiring present for a loved one. practitioner
