Kundalini Yoga, as taught by Yogi Bhajan, combines sequenced and timed movements and postures (kriyas) with specific hand movements (mudras), chanting (sound or naad yoga), breathing (pranayama), locks (bhandas) and meditation to clear and enhance subtle and physical energy allowing us to achieve our highest potential. Kundalini Yoga is an ancient form of yogic practice that deals most directly and quickly with the coherent and safe growth of inner awareness. It is non-religious and suitable for anyone, and widely practised in Europe and USA as well as enjoying a growing interest in Australia. what happens in a class?
A class begins by aligning and lengthening the spine in a sitting position together with an opening chant to create a protective and energetic space. Yoga postures (asanas) follow to free and warm the spine and nourish organs and tissues. The class continues with a kriya which is an ancient system of spiritual yogic practice that creates very precise effects through postures (fixed and dynamic), hand positions (mudras), bhandas, and breathing techniques.
Exercises within the kriya are held for a prescribed length of time and are designed to clear and regenerate the physical, mental and subtle energy. The class continues with relaxation whilst listening to sound yoga followed by a meditation for 3, 6 or 11 minutes which involves specific mudras combined with breathing and sound aimed to propel us forward leaving behind cycles and patterns of behaviour no longer useful, taking us to a greater awareness and expansion. who can practise kundalini yoga?
